Big Woods opening update

November 11, 2009 - Brown County residents will have to wait a bit longer to taste the product of its first craft brewery.

Big Woods Brewing Co. has announced on its Web site that the new brewpub in Nashville officially will begin serving customers at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.

A Tuesday opening had been announced on the site last week, but according to the brewery's Facebook page, it was decided to begin with what will be the establishment's "regular" schedule and reserve Tuesday for brewing.

When the Big Woods brewhouse opens Wednesday, on tap will be the brewed-on-premises beers Tim's Big Stout, the Six Foot Blonde, Possum Trot Pale Ale and Big Woods IPA. The restaurant also will be serving a limited menus of specialty pizzas, salads and other items, the Web site reports.

Brown County's first craft brewery is located at the site of the former Jug restaurant at 60 Molly Lane in Nashville.

Here are the operating hours from the Web site: Monday, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Tuesday (closed); Wednesday, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Craft beer arrives in Brown County

November 04, 2009 - Devotees of freshly brewed beer will soon have a place to heft their mugs in Brown County.

Big Woods Brewing Co. has scheduled its official opening for Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Nashville. According to the Web site of central Indiana's newest craft brewery, Big Woods will open on that date with beer and a limited food menu. A pre-opening celebration for family and friends takes place the night before.

The brewpub is located at 60 Molly Lane in Nashville in a building that once housed Nashville's Jug restaurant.

Fans who have been following the progress of renovations this summer on the Big Woods Facebook page already know that plans are to feature four styles of brewed-on-premises beer year-round — a blonde, a pale ale, an IPA and a Stout — with a fifth tap reserved for a seasonal beer.

The brewery was founded by Tim O'Bryan, Ed Ryan and Jeff McCabe. O'Byan is acting as the brewer. He also is the innkeeper at the Allison House bed and breakfast in Nashville, according to the Web site.

The brewing system arrived in late July, and regular Facebook updates have chronicled the crews' efforts to test beer recipes, renovate the building and get the requisite approvals to operate from the state of Indiana. The brewery will be able to brew two barrels of beer a week, according to Facebook posts.

Check the Web site at bigwoodsbeer.com for directions to the brewpub, and follow the progress of the operation on Facebook.

Java Porter time at Bloomington Brewing Co.

October 29, 2009 - Bloomington Brewing Company has cooked up a new batch of its popular Java Porter to greet the arrival of cooler weather.

The seasonal favorite is set for release Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Lennie's restaurant/brewpub, located at 1795 E. 10th St. in Blooomington.

The dark, smooth brew combines roasted barley malts and German select hops with Sumatran Blue Lingtong coffee from local coffee roaster Partridge and Quigley.

Lennie's will host a release party at 5 p.m. Nov. 4 to celebrate the return of Java Porter. The winter seasonal will replace BBC's Vision Weiss, which won't reappear until warmer weather comes again.

And this Monday, Nov. 2, from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Lennie's patrons can help the United Way by purchasing a meal.

Lennie's will be donating 20 percent of the dinner tab to the United Way of Monroe County when a customer presents a Helping Hand certificate. Contact Katie Harvey at kdharvey@indiana.edu to get a certificate. Only one certificate per table is needed to trigger the donation.

Upland throwing party for new beer, Feline Rescue Center

September 24, 2009 - The release of a new Upland beer is cause enough for celebration, but the party for the latest batch of the brewery’s Schwarz (black) lager also benefits a good cause.

The Bloomington craft brewery is hosting its third annual SchwarzTag (German for “black day”) on Oct. 10 to pop the top on the latest edition of Upland’s Schwarz lager, which also will be available in bottles for retail sale this year for the first time. The event starts at 11 a.m. at the brewery at 350 W. 11th Street and goes until 1 a.m.

That’s the party. The good cause is the Exotic Feline Rescue Center near Centerpoint, just west of Owen County, one of the largest facilities in the United States caring for abused, unwanted and neglected exotic felines. Upland is donating $1 from every point of Schwarz lager sold that day, as well as the suggested $5 cover charge, to the rescue center.

Rocky, a bobcat from the feline center, will be at the brewery from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during SchwarzTag so that customers can get a better idea of what their donations will be supporting.

There also will be music. The bands Jascha and the New Old Cavalry will be playing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Music, beer, poetry

August 12, 2009 - Hillbilly Haiku, Upland Brewery's celebration of beer, Americana music, philanthropy and 17-syllable poetry takes place Sept 12 at the Bloomington craft brewery.

Performers lined up for the 2nd annual Hillbilly Haiku Festival include Rev. Payton's Big Damn Band, Backyard Tire Fire and the Clayton Anderson Band. Tickets are priced $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children under age 12 will be admitted free.

Advance tickets may be purchased at the Sunrise Box Office or Upland Brewing Co. All proceeds benefit the Sycamore Land Trust. See the brewery's Web site at www.uplandbeer.com for further details.

Bad food, bad service, great cause

July 13, 2009 - Cooks and servers at the Upland Brewery brewpub will be switching jobs on Sunday, July 26, with Hoosier Hills Food Bank getting the benefit of the unusual role-reversal.

The Bloomington brewery is calling it "bad food, bad service, great cause"; 50 percent of all sales — including beer — between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. that day will be donated to the food bank.

"We are hoping everyone who comes to the event will have a sense of humor about the controlled chaos they will be subjected to during their time at Upland that day," Upland restaurant manager Angela Schnick said in announcing the benefit event.
