Homebrewers need to save back a couple bottles of their best brew, or get busy on a new batch if they expect to compete in this year's UpCup homebrew competition hosted by Upland Brewing Co.

The recipe chosen as best of show on May 16 will be brewed at the Upland brewhouse and entered in the 2009 Great American Beer Fest's Pro-Am Competition.

Here are the ground rules for the AHA/BJCP sanctioned competition:

• One entry per homebrewer; $5 entry fee; two bottles required.

• Entries due by May 8. Entries that are mailed must arrive before May 8. Address mailed entries to Upland Brewing Co. UpCup, 350 W. 11th St., Bloomington, IN 47404. Entries also may be delivered in person to Upland at the same address.

• BJCP entry form can be found online at www.bjcp.org. Entrant need fill out only the brewer and entry information. Ingredients and procedure are not required.

• Each bottle must have a completed bottle ID form attached by a rubber band. The form can be found at www.bjcp.

• Make $5 entry fee checks out to Upland Brewing Co. Entry fees will be redistributed to BJCP certified judges who will be evaluating entries.

Judging will begin at 10 a.m. May 16 at Upland. A buffet dinner and awards ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. As a special treat, a keg of last year's winning brew — Bad Penny Imperial IPA by Ken Smith of Plainfield, Ind. — will be tapped during the awards ceremony.
